About Us

We are Community and Regional Planning graduate students at the University of New Mexico. Our goal is to raise awareness about the harm caused by private prisons and the criminal justice system. Alongside community members and coalitions working to end investment in private prisons and ultimately abolish New Mexico prisons, we compiled a series of research, political action, and political education-oriented resources.

Research

Blog Posts

The research team has focused on how the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted human rights violations of incarcerated residents. This speaks to larger issues within the criminal justice system, the social construction of crime and who and why we dehumanize. Our hope is to provide quality data through investigative research and interviews to active community organizations and coalitions working to end private prison investment in New Mexico, while informing the larger public on issues surrounding incarceration.

Political Education

Social Media Campaign

The political education team has focused on cultivating a social media campaign to inform the public on the harm private prisons are doing in New Mexico. The work aids in expanding audiences to the work of coalitions in New Mexico lobbying to end the investment of public resources in private prisons.

The political action team has analyzed state documents and reporting, current research and conducted interviews throughout the state to curate a mini-documentary on the harm of the prison industrial complex in New Mexico.
